Georgette Chen (1906—1993) is a key figure in the development of modern art in Singapore, widely recognised for her achievements as an artist and contributions as an educator.
Self Portrait, 1934 was painted when Chen was starting to gain success as an artist in France, with her observational and exploratory style of painting. She later moved to Malaya and Singapore where she painted her most emblematic works.
